The US region known for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a swift change. New research indicates that New England is warming faster than nearly any other place on the globe.

Unprecedented Pace of Transformation

The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the study. The pace of its warming has reportedly increased notably in the last half-decade.

"The temperature is not only rising, it's speeding up," explained a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for millennia."

The analysis positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher added.

Analysis Approach and Results

For the study, researchers examined multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"This represents very fast heating, which is concerning," said the study author.

Key Climate Patterns

  • Minimum temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.
  • Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other times of year.
  • The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being diminished.

Marine Influences and the "Energy Storage"

A primary cause for this unusual build-up of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.

In the region near New England, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.

"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a massive storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once seen as a relatively stable region, New England has suffered extreme weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating floods and extended drought.

The increasing temperatures endangers cherished elements of local culture:

  • Syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
  • Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
  • Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.

"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
